What we do
GIH is convinced that the site of the old Saanen hospital is suitable bring medical care in Saanenland back to a high standard. The aim is to develop a regional health centre with a focus on maintaining and expanding primary care. We want to promote and optimise the basic services of family medicine in the region.
Once primary care has been secured on a satisfactory level, the next goal is to expand the range of services in the sense of a health centre with additional treatment options. The site of the old hospital is to be revitalised and to be developed into a meeting place and a place for healthy living in all its aspects.

Who we are

Barbara E. Herbert
President of the Board and Shareholder
Barbara E. Herbert is a co-founder and driving force behind the GIH. She is a successful entrepreneur and member of the advisory board of an international high-tech company. Herbert is a firm believer in holistic and patient-centred medicine. She sees local and international partnerships as critical success factors for GIH’s projects. On the one hand, Herbert is convinced of the need to improve local healthcare in Saanenland. On the other hand, she emphasises the international appeal of the project, which provides sustainable support for the local economy.

Dominik Unger
Vice-president of the Board and CEO
Dominik Unger manages various companies and serves on numerous boards of directors as a director and chairman.
Unger holds a Master’s degree in Corporate Finance, Marketing and Business Law from the University of Basel. He is a graduate of Harvard Business School (Boston, USA), where he completed the Advanced Management Programme, and IMD (Lausanne, Switzerland), where he completed the Senior Management Programme. Dominik is fluent in English, Spanish and German. He is a successful change manager who builds companies and implements strategic projects.
Dominik is also chairman of the board of SarinaMed AG, a group practice in Saanen (Switzerland, canton of Bern). He is the owner of a family office that supports clients in realising their life goals.

Walter Egger
Board Member and Shareholder
Walter Egger is a co-founder of the GIH. As the owner of the engineering firm Egger AG, he is firmly rooted in the Gstaad region and has close ties to the local economy. With his engineering firm, he plays a key role in many infrastructure and construction projects in the region. His network ranges from business and politics to international guests and residents of Gstaad. For many years, Egger was president of Gstaad Saanenland Tourism. Today he is chairman of Gstaad Airport AG and, as a member of the board of GIH, is responsible for all matters relating to land and construction.

Rolf Zundel
Board Member
Dr. med. Rolf Zundel can look back on a long career as a physician and entrepreneur in the Swiss healthcare system. He studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern and is General Internal Medicine Specialist FMH. Together with his wife, Dr. med. Doris Zundel, he built up and managed a network of medical practices. He has been a member of the boards of directors of companies in the medical sector for several years. He is a graduate of the CAS Board of Directors of the Rochester-Bern Executive Programme (RoBe). Rolf Zundel is a member of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of the SarinaMed group practice in Saanen, which opened in 2024 and which GIH played a key role in establishing.

Markus Kappeler
Shareholder
J. Markus Kappeler is a co-founder of the GIH – the man of the first hour – and has been associated with Gstaad for many years. He worked for nine years on the Gstaad Saanenland Tourism board as vice president, reorganised the tennis tournament and was involved in the restructuring of the Gstaad cable car company. He was involved in the ‘Haus des Gastes’ project as a representative of the board and most recently chaired the Les Arts Gstaad Foundation. Kappeler trained as a mechanical engineer in Biel and completed a degree in economics at the University of Bern. He managed several SMEs as CEO before setting up his own business as a management consultant. Today he works for the GIH as a consultant and is involved in specialised issues.

Daniel Schaller
Project Management
Daniel Schaller has more than 25 years of experience in the banking sector. Throughout his career, Daniel Schaller contributed to the transformation and the growth of numerous businesses in various parts of the world. Daniel gained experience in numerous roles and environments. He is an expert in both public and private markets, worked as Head of Sales Management for Latin America and managed a Latin America EAM acquisition project for UBS out of Mexico, and brings considerable management experience to the table. He is the founder of two family businesses in real estate and socially responsible interior design. Schaller is an alumnus of Oxford Said Business School (London, United Kingdom) where he successfully completed an advanced Private Market programme. He also holds Certificates in Family Wealth Advising and Family Business Advising from the Family Firm Institute (Boston, United States).

Markus Iseli
Communication Management
Dr. phil. Markus Iseli is a versatile communication professional with a keen sense of strategic issues. He has an academic background combined with over a decade’s experience in publishing and in communication as a senior team leader. Markus worked over ten years in a publishing house as a Deputy Publishing Director, where he oversaw an English magazine, a wide range of publishing projects, and led the administrative team. At Gstaad International Health Group he is responsible for every aspect of communication. Markus holds an MA in English Studies as well as Media and Communication Studies. He has further completed a PhD in English Literature at the University of Neuchâtel and Queen’s University (Kingston, Canada) and currently works on an MAS in Corporate Communication Management at the FHNW (Olten, Switzerland).
